Most pharmacies in Germany are open Mon-Fri from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm and during the morning on Saturday. There is an emergency pharmacy service in Augsburg that can be reached outside of regular business hours and on Sundays and holidays. In Germany, most medications are only available at pharmacies. There are pharmacy-only, over the counter and prescription-only medications. You will need a doctor’s prescription in order to receive prescription-only medication. Some medication that does not require a prescription in other countries does require a prescription in Germany. You do not need a prescription for pharmacy-only and over the counter medication.

You will pay a portion of the costs of the medication if you have statutory health insurance. If you have private health insurance, you will pay for the medication in full and receive reimbursement from your insurance company after submitting the receipt.
